No technology skills are required to participate in IPAL. However, there are some skills that would be beneficial for students to have. Those skills include keyboarding, ability to drop/drag components on a screen, and the ability to upload documents to files. While these skills are helpful, they are not required to participate in IPAL. Students/parents needing technological skill support can schedule one-on-one meetings with the teacher to go through the required skills and get individual support.  

The video library is a great resource for IPAL students and families to watch short videos based on different technology skills that students/families can use to learn the skills too.

IPAL requires students to do a weekly check-in with their teachers to discuss grades, progress, and any support the student may have. Our younger students are expected to do this check-in with their learning coach and teacher. All IPAL work is done at home, independently or with a learning coach. 

Students have the opportunity to participate in workshops that allow students to meet with other students around their grades and explore enrichment opportunities. 

PIXeL students are required to join the Zoom based classrooms on time for each session daily. Students should be engaged in lessons and turning assignments in on time. Teacher support is available during class sessions and during Teacher Office Hours daily.

Families interested in participating in IPAL, PIXeL, or Pasco Parent Partnership are required to go through an enrollment meeting with the PDLA facilitator. During the enrollment meeting, the facilitator will discuss all the programs, giving families more information, allowing the team to decide which program best meets the family and student’s needs. After the enrollment meeting, the facilitator will send the parent/guardian a form to digitally sign, confirming the program choice. After the form is digitally signed, the family will receive a digital copy of the handbook, an orientation video based on the program selected, an email with start dates and curriculum pickup information, and an email from the teacher with contact information and getting started information. 

All students participating in IPAL, PIXeL, or Pasco Parent Partnership are required to complete the district and state assessments. Each assessment will be performed in-person with a district employee overseeing the assessments. This process allows for a higher level of technological support to students during the assessments and fidelity surrounding the assessments.  

With students working from home and using potentially different curriculum options from the traditional brick-and-mortar schools, we adjust the enrollment dates to meet the student’s needs. We offer rolling enrollment all year long, with families being able to enroll two weeks before school start up to the middle of the fourth quarter. We close enrollment at this time each school year because we want students to be successful in their academic journey. Enrolling students past this date greatly reduces academic success as students must rush through the learning process and have limited time to complete the coursework. Special circumstances apply where families can potentially enroll their student beyond that date, please contact the program if your family has specific questions. 

Students with IEPs have a required IEP transition meeting scheduled prior to enrollment. This IEP transition meeting allows the student, family/guardian, current resource teacher, PDLA resource teacher, and PDLA leadership team the opportunity to evaluate the student’s needs and determine if IPAL, PIXeL, or P3 is an appropriate learning environment and the process for having IEP minutes to be served. If the placement is appropriate, the facilitator will continue with the traditional enrollment process while the resource teacher schedules the support time with the family. 

STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING 
 
In accordance with the Alternative Learning Experience Implementation Standards, WAC 392-121-182, prior to enrollment parent(s) or guardian shall be provided with documentation attesting to the understanding of the difference between home-based instruction and enrollment in an alternative learning experience (ALE). 

 

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION 
Home-Based Instruction 

• Is provided by the parent or guardian as authorized under RCW 28A.200 and 28A.225.010.  

• Students are not enrolled in public education. 

• Students are not subject to the rules and regulations governing public schools, including course, graduation, and assessment requirements. The public school is under no obligation to provide instruction or instructional materials, or otherwise supervise the student’s education. 

 

Alternative Learning Experience (e.g. iPAL) 

• Is authorized under WAC 392-121-182. 

• Students are enrolled in public education either full-time or part-time. 

• Students are subject to the rules and regulations governing public school students including course, graduation, and assessment requirements for all portions of the ALE. 

• Learning experiences are: 

  • Supervised, monitored, assessed, and evaluated by certificated staff. 

  • Provided via a written Student Learning Plan. 

  • Provided in whole, or part outside the regular classroom. 

 

Part-time Enrollment of Home-Based Instruction Students 
Home-based instruction students may enroll in public school programs, including ALE programs, on a part-time basis and retain their home-based instruction status. In the case of part-time enrollment in ALE, the student will need to comply with the requirements of the ALE written Student Learning Plan, but not be required to participate in state assessments or meet state graduation requirements.
